 EXPLORING THE DREAMWORLDS

with the DREAMWORLDS WRITERS & PUBLISHING COLLECTIVE

An Anthology is by its nature a collaborative, even an emotional exercise, so, besides having a look at our authors, here's an illustrated guide to the inspiration and fantasy backgrounds that have got our DreamWorlds Writers Collective off the ground (also it features  the imagery for that 4th prize desk calendar!).

A lot of us started our love affair with fantasy at an early age reading C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia. Here's that one-armed lamp-post where Lucy met Tumnus at the height of White Witch Jadis' demonic 100 year winter

And of course it's only a hop, skip and a jump from Narnia to Lewis' fellow 'Inkling', J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, so this is the first of many vistas that have inspired our artistic types from his creation of Arda.
With a basis in Nordic legends the people of Middle Earth also fuelled creativity in fan art, as we see here in a depiction of Dwarvish seeker-sense for identifying precious ores and gems!

But fantasy is within us as well and colours our imaginations in the waking world, as well as our dreamscapes, where leafy paths might lead to romance and magical encounters
Then there's the hoopier realms of fantasy, like Discworld, that dare to pose questions like... Does the Chaos Butterfly do its best work in a fragrant meadow, or some exotic ornamental garden?

For this forest in miniature the Lands of the Fey prompted a nursery rhyme spoof...
Fairy, Fairy, so contrary,
how does your forest glow?
With leafy dells or dusky spells
and tiny barbs shot from a bow?

Or at the other end of the scale, a great honking mountain in British Columbia, Canada suddenly becomes a dead ringer for a peak in the Misty Mountains (but with the sun out!)

We even ask ourselves what the Elven Havens in the Gulf of Lune have in common with villas on the French Riviera and Norwegian Fjords...

Folklore and ancient cultures also beg the question of what delights a Druid with a silver sickle might discover around a creeper-covered oak tree...

The familiar can also take on an otherworldly cast so you find yourself wondering whether grass can grow beyond the final frontier/ Would it still be green or greener yet?

Or pondering on the ambient life-forces of plants and stones being revealed to the Witch Peoples by light of Moon or Sun.

A quiet early morning stroll, where a tangle of Travellers Joy, lit by glinting hoar-frost in a wintry sunrise, can beguile your eyes into an enchanted wonderland.

In fact fantasy's whatever you fancy and doesn't have to have wall to wall Witches, Alien abductions, Vampires, Barbarians, Pixies, Ghosts or Dragons - it's just there in the corner of your eye, or a blink away from a daydream. We all know that truth is stranger than fiction, and so it is with our inner world, where what's on the surface may have nothing much to do with what's lurking deep down below it...

The DreamWorlds Writers and Publishing Collective is open to writers of all genres, fiction or non-fiction who are interested in sharing their world views - whatever planet that happens to be on!

  1. Just thought I'd get this on in case we had any early birds flying in! ;-) this post isn't officially open for business until around 6 am BST tomorrow - it's just that I'm not up that early soooo, I've put it on sooner rather than later :-D

  2. Launceston in North Cornwall? Haven't been there but have been, many times to Launceston in northern Tasmania which is on the Tamar River. Bit different because the Tassie Launceston is pronounced Lawn - Cest - On and the Tamar is not so much a river as an estuary! Enjoy the party!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Hi Kathy! The Cornish have 'ideas' about pronunciation - it's Lawn-stun here (confuses transatlantic visitors no end! :-D) or even Lahhhn-son if you've been on the scrumpy (flat, strong cider) too long ROFL.
    Thanks for dropping in :-)

  4. Hi, Jan! Now how beautiful is that cover? SIMPLY GORGEOUS! Did you do that yourself? Lovely tour stop today and since you're the only one with the drinks, I suppose you'll have a full house (I saw both "Johns" hanging around your door outside). Joy will be in here soon, hot on my heels, so let me run before she gets here. I swear I think that woman's chasing me!! Gotta go! Love ya, Jan!

Now - the bar IS open and so's the buffet with plenty of local delicacies like jam & clotted cream scones, steak pasties, cider, dandelion & burdock cordial, ginger beer (with a kick! ;-) ) and some lovage to go in your ! Get stuck in! :-D

  10. This is a delightful post, Jan! Funny, but I didn't discover the wonderful world of Narnia until the movies came out. The visuals and trailers presented here are stunning - and I loved the finale, FANTASY by Earth, Wind, and Fire! Thank you for the romp through the lands of fantasy - and good luck with the book... I'll need to get one of those.

  11. What a lovely blog, Jan. Visually it is amazing and the content is enticing. Congratulations on both fronts! My children grew up with me reading from the Narnia tales, so I'm excited to read Dreamless Roads. Enjoy the day of partying....you've created quite a celebration for us all!

    1. Thanks for calling in, Gwen! :-) The anthology's a little edgier than Narnia although I think it'll be OK for YAs - we stretched the boundaries a bit so there's a mix of epic, horror, contemporary and science FANTASY (as opposed to 'straight' fiction) which should appeal to most genre addicts as all fiction is fantasy to some degree! ;-)

    1. Welcome, Tara - thanks for coming! :-D
Dreamless Roads is from Tolkien and describes the waking trance-like state that Elves go off into when they need to revive their spirits. In my roleplaying days this was something Jano, an elven Bard (who ran a bard's inn), needed to do after lively evenings when there were Hobbits and Dwarves around singing and doing what Hobbitds and Dwarves do after a pint or three... :-D

    1. Well met, Master Zandri! :-D Anthologys are wonderful and a good way get away with shorter stories that still showcase your work and may even be teasers for longer tales. The penultimate story, Squire, is one such, as it's author is planning to follow his hero's later adventures when he gets the time ;-)

I do have comments on the first trailer for Dreamless Roads. Love the music, and I think the small white font with the descriptions gets lost a bit in the overall scheme, but overall very nicely done.

Dreamless Roads looks so appealing and I would LOVE to win the signed paperback! I've liked the FB page and the YouTube video, I’ve followed you on Twitter, and I’ve joined you on Linkedin. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis was the first book I read as a child that showed me how magical books could really be so I've been a fan of fantasy books for a long time. So, Renae - Welcome to the DreamWorlds Writers Collective! :-D As for Narnia - what a true wonderland - it's possibly the most influential of the fantasy worlds to shape young lives, with it's special mix of imagination and decent principles and, in my case and so many others, made a spark of creativity burst into a flaming passion for books and writing.
No one's late to this party - it just keeps on getting better so go enjoy yourself and see if there's any margaritas left! ;-)

  37. Literally my FOURTH attempt at posting a comment - not sure what's going on in the server/blogosphere (on my mobile phone, no more!). But it's worth the repeated attempts because this was just a lovely post, full of wonder and enticing visuals. And the Collective is such a great idea. Your passion for fantasy is so clear, and so nicely rooted in the tradition of Lewis and Tolkien -- and I'm guessing also the mythopoetics of Joseph Campbell! But then you (and your colleagues) also move past that into your own distinctive voices and world creations. Congratulations on all the fine work and on the special blog day today! Cheers.

I don't know why it's so, but it seems cast in stone that writers ARE very nice people - I suspect it's perhaps because you've got to really like people to write about them, or for them?
Magic dust's a pesky thing but it does make for happy 'accidents', so I'm glad you made it through the turbulence - the cider's over there! ;-)
