An Anthology is by its nature a collaborative, even an emotional exercise, so, besides having a look at our authors, here's an illustrated guide to the inspiration of classic and original fantasy backgrounds that got our DreamWorlds Writers Collective off the ground...
A lot of us started our love affair with fantasy at an early age, reading C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia. Here's that one-armed lamp-post where Lucy met Tumnus at the height of White Witch Jadis' demonic 100 year winter
And of course it's only a hop, skip and a jump from Narnia to Lewis' fellow 'Inkling', J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth. This is the first of many vistas that have inspired our artistic types from his creation of Arda.
With a basis in Nordic legends the people of Middle Earth also fuelled creativity in fan art, as we see here in a depiction of Dwarvish seeker-sense for identifying precious ores and gems!
But fantasy is within us as well and colours our imaginations in the waking world, as well as our dreamscapes, where leafy paths might lead to romance and magical encounters
Then there's the hoopier realms of fantasy, like Discworld, that dare to pose questions like... Does the Chaos Butterfly do its best work in a fragrant meadow, or some exotic ornamental garden?
For this forest in miniature the Lands of the Fae prompted a nursery rhyme spoof...
Fairy, Fairy, so contrary,
how does your forest glow?
With leafy dells or dusky spells
and tiny barbs shot from a bow?
Or at the other end of the scale, a great honking mountain in British Columbia, Canada suddenly becomes a dead ringer for a peak in the Misty Mountains (but with the sun out!)
We even ask ourselves what the Elven Havens in the Gulf of Lune have in common with villas on the French Riviera and Norwegian Fjords...
Folklore and ancient cultures also beg the question of what delights a Druid with a silver sickle might discover around a creeper-covered oak tree...
The familiar can also take on an otherworldly cast so you find yourself wondering whether grass can grow beyond the final frontier? Would it still be green or greener yet?
Or pondering on the ambient life-forces of plants and stones being revealed to the Witch Peoples by light of Moon or Sun.
A quiet early morning stroll, where a tangle of Travellers Joy, lit by glinting hoar-frost in a wintry sunrise, can beguile your eyes into an enchanted wonderland.
In fact fantasy's whatever you fancy and doesn't have to have wall to wall Witches, Alien abductions, Vampires, Barbarians, Pixies, Ghosts or Dragons - it's just there in the corner of your eye, or a blink away from a daydream. We all know that truth is stranger than fiction, and so it is with our inner world, where what's on the surface may have nothing much to do with what's lurking deep down below it...
The DreamWorlds Writers and Publishing Colective is open to writers of all genres, fiction or non-fiction who are interested in sharing their views - whatever planet that happens to be on!

Great blog post. Thank you for adding my link today too! I love the illustrations in your book trailer and on your cover. I think so many people are inspired by the work of C.S.Lewis and I loved reading The Hobbit when I was at school. Such talented authors.

Hi Lizzie! :-) Dreamless Roads is my 'Cinderella' book, because it's not listed on RRBC as none of my co-authors are members, so it's the 1st official DreamWorlds Publishing title! ;-). In fact the expanded version, Dreamless Roads Revisited, has becomethe first part of my latest book, A Freebooter's Fantasy Almanac - with tons more contextual poems and shorts that I wrote for my alter-ego elf-bard persona Janowyn! lol :-D

Amazing blog post, Jan! I loved the cover and the trailer of Dreamless Roads. Very evocative! Last night I watched (and was moved by) the film, The Magic of Belle Isle. Your post brought me back into that story - with its focus on the imagination. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWelcome Gwen and thanks for those kind words! :-D Putting this anthology together was a project very close to my heart as there are several writers who contributed who're Tolkien roleplay forum buddies of mine (some of whom are also in A Freebooter's Fantasy Almanac) and do amazing work in very different styles to Middle Earth. It was also great fun to play with some of the stunning photo images above that a few of them sent me to mess around with to make a fantasy landscapes calendar a couple of years back.
Deleteit's a cute little writer's community, but alas - they're all Twitter-phobes, however much I nag them! :-)

There was plenty for me in this post. Like many other I grew up reading fantasy, starting with Tolkien, naturally. I'm a big Cranberries fan too. It must be fascinating working on an anthology, letting people be creative, but still colouring within the lines... Nice post.
ReplyDeleteIt was a really rewarding experience putting the anthology together Brent :-) I've known some of the authors for years online and one or two are now 'real life' friends as well, especially Sue Bridgwater who was my co-editor and my personal editor for other solo titles.

DeleteWhat a warm inviting post! I love fantasy. When I was a little girl, I was often reprimanded because I lived in my head and would forget to live in reality. :) Sometimes I still do. The trailer is AWESOME and I love the name, Dreamless Roads. I also am a huge fan of anthologies because you see the blending of the different authors' personalities.
